

My Dad was born on May 30th 1889. In 1904 at the age of 15 years he volunteered and joined the army at Hounslow Barracks. He signed on for a total of 9 years with the colours, plus 5 years with the reserve. He was posted to Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow where he joined the 1st Battalion The Cameronians, 1/7th. Scottish Rifles. After serving 9yrs [India, Egypt, South Africa to name a few] He was one of the first to be sent to France for World War 1, first action to be involved in was the battle at Mons starting on the 14th August 1914 and lasting until October 23rd 1914. The soldiers who fought in this battle were later entitled to be called the Old Contemptibles. Dad was awarded the Military Medal and this was published in the London Gazette on 10th November 1918. He was also entitled to wear three gold braid wound distinctions. Dad was discharged on 24th August 1918 as he was no longer physically fit. having suffered wounds to his right leg [leaving him disabled], also bullet wounds in the right shoulder. Mum and Dad were married in 1915. While Dad was away Mum went to work in a munition factory at the Woolwich Arsenal which is in London.
