I moved to Bletchley in 1963 I transferred from Western District Post Office to Bletchley Post Office under the GLC housing programme. I was a postman at the time. In those days Bletchley was a rural area with a population of 40 thousand. The staffing at the sorting office was, 40 the staff on the Town rounds all had bicycles and the postman on night duty had to cycle and deliver a part of Newton Longville before finishing his duty. All of the surrounding area which was rural was covered by vans .The area stretched from Salford, Wavendon, Milton Keynes Village to Mursley and Thornton. All the mail for Buckingham, Newport Pagnell ,and Wolverton came through the Bletchley Sorting Office and then was transferred to these offices by vans at 4.30 in the morning. The only way to Wolverton was the old A5 to Stoney Stratford turning right along Wolverton Road towards Newport Pagnell. Likewise the route to Newport Pagnell was by Simpson Road at Fenny Stratford which was the only direct route to Newport Pagnell. The winters were quite different to today, plenty of snow and thick fogs in the mornings. I found the foggiest route was the run to Buckingham, where the road was narrow and lots of bends, the narrow bridge which is a single bridge and only one car at a time could cross. It is now kept at the side of the new road as a reminder of the bridge in times gone by. Since then Milton Keynes as grown into a large city. The many houses, offices, and factories has meant the Post Office has increased in size. As well as two extra delivery offices at Dane Road and Brinklow, the Dawson Road Office which is a mechanised distribution office has invested in extra coding machines for local deliveries as well as outward mail for the rest of the country. Once the mail is sorted the local mail is transported to all of the offices mentioned above. The outward mail is also despatched by road transport, rail or plane. The staff ratio has increased by hundreds not only for Milton Keynes but also for Buckingham, Newport Pagnell and Wolverton. The development in these areas has been ongoing and larger premises have had to be built to house the extra fittings and staff needed for the new housing estates. As well as the industrial, shopping, and entertainment areas . Since the start of the building of Milton Keynes Post Office planning staff have had a full workload of planning for the large increase in the areas of development stretching from Newport Pagnell, Wolverton, Stoney Stratford, Newton Longville and Whaddon. Not only for delivery and collections but for staff requirements, vehicles and cycles for the extra miles that need to be covered. Now the development of Milton Keynes is going far beyond the original figure of 240,000, more staff will be required for delivery and driving duties. This will be counter balanced by the new generation of advanced sorting and coding machines that replace staff which at present do a lot of manual sorting on local mails as well as mail for the remainder of the country.It may well be in years to come that a lot of the staff will be used on a part time basis. Just to conclude this little story of the Post Office which started off as a small sorting office in Bletchley and is now a large office with different delivery offices spread across the city of Milton Keynes. It is very strange that the very tiny village of Milton Keynes that was surrounded by green fields is now a city of commerce, shops, and industry. |
